After the first day of class which is lecture we go into the lab area where we can evaluate how well the student has understood what was in the the lesson. After being in the lab and makeing an assessment on what each student learned you may have to fine tune your lecture or how you evaluate different students as it is a on going process.

I would began by having each student tell a little about their self and what new technology in cars interest them the most. Then i small groups Ihave the most frequent items reseached and presented.

Hi Jeff - Pop quizzes do keep students on their toes and like CATs give you immediate feedback on a smaller scale. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

Hi Rich - welcome to ED 103! The hand-on activities are perfect for the kinesthetic learners. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

Hi Kenneth- Asking questions in that manner is not as scary as directing a question to a specific student. (We all experience that "Deer in the Headlights" thing!)Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

I never thought about CATS in the terms in this CEE as they are defining them, but I am constantly asking differant types of questions in relation to the subject of study for that day. I do find that if i ask simply why did they do this, or what do you think about that, or hey lets think this out guys and gals. I have very good results doing this and also sometimes a lot of fun.

Using visuals that the student can take with him/her, ie: Using schematics of different air systems helps the students see and understand each of the individual components and systems. Putting these together piece by piece brings them alive with questions and understanding

Pretests are one methode used to gain an understanding of the knowledge in the class on the subjects to be covered. Once and awhile I do pop Quizes to see if the students have picked up what I have covered (Punctuated Lectures).I think Some of the cats ideas I will use in a future class.

Hi Jason- Welcome to ED 103! I would consider your assessment during class as CATs. They can come in all sorts of varieties not only those described in the Module. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career!

I do not directly use CAT's as they are defined i the chapter. Rather I have the students do the reviews at the ends of the chapters and I cover the answers quickly before giving a test. I cover all of the material during our class discussions, so if the students are paying attention and taking notes, they have little problems with the review or with tests. If the students are not attentive, they have the opportunity during the review to get focused. Mainly I use interactive assesments of the studetns in the Q+A's during the discussions and their lab performances to make sure that the class is going in the direction taht it needs to go.

HI Jerry - Welcome to ED 103! From your post it sounds like you are evaluating your students as they enter your class. Am I correct? I think that is always wise; determining where your students are in their learning is necessary to know where to begin. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

I like to assess the student’s level of understanding by questioning them in areas that are necessary to complete prior to entering into a more complex course. This will give me an idea of what level they are at and how much time will be needed for reviewing certain areas before continuing. I also like to question through out the lecture or our have group activities that will assess their knowledge. Study guides can also give you ideas about their comprehension of the subject.

In Ford we have developed quizzes to complete after each web based training. The quizzes involve both multiple choice and short written explanations. During the lesson, I go around the room and ask questions of each student as we go over each section. In the lab work stations I go around and ask questions of the students to make sure they are on track.

The basic CAT that I use is questioning of the material being covered, although I try to use different methods of CAT. The Minute Paper does work very well when you want to see where the classes that would take her subject matter. The punctuated Lectures or what I call “ blast from the past”, I will ask questions about topics that I have already covered either two hours prior to or from the last part of the day from the day before. I have found that using different types of CAT have to be used because of the learning abilities of the students.

Hi Gregory - Welcome to ED 103. You are running a dynamic classroom that is addressing all the learning styles! Best wishes on continued success in your teaching career! Susan

The classroom Assessment Techniques that I use on a regular basis are: pre-test topic quizzes, problem solving group activities, and punctuated lectures with questioning about the topic areas covered or to be covered. This helps me deliver the technical information in a method that most of the students can absorb and retain. I keep the students involved in these processes. Change of state and activity also keep the students highly motivated even when the material is difficult and somewhat dry in nature.

Hi James - Welcome to ED 103! The Pre-assessment that you use is so important as it guides your course plan. As you know, where it gets tricky is whenyou have students with diverse backgrounds. Best wishes for continued success in yout teaching career! Susan

The cat I like to use is Background knowledge prob this really gives me an idea of wear they stand in the cource I have a sheet of terms that are part of the cource and they tell me if they know what they are or have ever heard of them this helps me adapt the class to my students needs

Hi Thomas - That is the mark of a good instructor - always fine-tuning instruction to reach our students - great work! Best wishes - Susan

After the first day of class which is only lecture we move into the lab area where we can evaluate how well the student has understood the lesson. After this process you may or may not have to make changes or add demos to improve the learning experience for the student. This may be a on going process because each class is different and what works with one may be a complete failure with another so you are always changing your techniques.
