Put it on them

I find that by using the Formative Evaluation Process it helps to let the student know where they are and need to be in order to be successful in my class. When all is said and done there are no surprises.

I find that issue with both online and residential students. I send emails, write comments in the grade book and sometimes call online students who need to check their grades. For residential students, I talk to them directly and I'm still stunned that students don't check their progress. Sometimes I think they just close their eyes and wish.

Absolutely. Having a student monitor his or her own progress through formative evaluations is a wonderful step toward his or her eventual professionalism in the field.

I find it surprising as well. As a rule, I update blackboard with assignment and comprehensive feedback; however, I noticed many students never even sign in to BB to check their progress. As a result, I try to remind/encourage students to go to BB (usually to no avail).

Even verbal feedback on a daily or bi-weekly basis allows the student to feel like a participant in their education rather than a commodity.

I agree, formative one on one sessions allow the student direct feed back, quiz grades and daily participatio . the can take this information to gage where they arein the cousre. Using this information, students should have a clear picture of what needs to be done to pass sucessfully

Hi Joslynn - It always amazes me how students can go on for weeks with no real idea of how they are doing! ( Of coures there are always those who "claim" they didn't know!) Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

I agree with the no surprises idea, every Monday I give the students a print out of their grade so they know where they stand at all times. So they can see if they need to study more ect/

I agree. By using the Formative Evaluation Process, my students know exactly where they stand in the class, and what needs to be accomplished going forward in order to succeed. This evaluation is done daily and weekly.

I think this is accurate. These benchmarks are like road signs that can keep students informed of where the are and where they need to be. When coupled with a detailed syllabus I think the students have ability to measure their own knowledge effectively.
