Hi Melissa, I agree with your summary of self assessments!

I feel that the adult student's set goals much higher. The adult motivation to learn is why self evaluation can be used as a helpful tool
Self-assessments force students to honestly evaluate their work and progress in the course. I have personally found that students are either very hard on themselves or very easy. This gives the instructor feedback on what the student's perception of excellence is and can help in addressing issues.
It can help students to understand and correct their own errors before the instructor assess their performance.
It will help the students understand where they are at in their learning goals, and give them new goals to further their education.
I tend to do self-assessments at the beginning and end of a course, but after taking this course, I will incorporate self-assessment throughout a course. It's important to check in often.
Hi Tammie, Thanks for your post and I hope that you find the site useful!

I agree with Noah about self assessments. I never give them in my class either but I do give quizzes as well to see how well they are doing. I am looking forward to going to this site, that you suggested, and seeing what it has to offer. I'm hoping to take away some very helpful ideas that I can use in my classroom.
If the student truly wants to succeed he will have a desire to be apprised of didactic & practical progress or lack thereof. Only upon self assessment then may he be aware that a problem exists which needs to be addressed or that his endeavors are being satisfied by his achieved grades & improved knowledge.
Self assessments can be used at the college setting to help students see where they need the most help. It will help pinpoint the areas where they are the weakest and if they understand the material that has been covered.
It can help the students know how they are doing and what areas need improvement in.
Self-assessments can help bring the student into the learning process from a different angle. It empowers the student to judge themself in the learning situation, hopefully enabling them to adjust their approach to learning if need be.
A student self-assessment can be effective because it can show the instructor the students strengths and weakness
Post-tests are a good way for self assessment in the classroom. Mixing fill-in-the-blank, short essays, and problem soving can quickly build a students knowlege bank and confidence. In order to do well on such an exam students must study and cannot get by guessing due to the different requirements for each.
Hi Medeina, Thanks for your post to the forum. I also find that when they self assess, students seem more willing to take responsibility for their weaknesses. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

When I offer the self assessment tool to my students, they often appreciate and confirm their own knowledge of where their progress of understanding and learning skills are at.
Self assessments are a great learning tool for students in my program. I teach ultrasound so I have the students working on portfolios every time I introduce a new protocol. I offer images to the students that they will need to then replicate on their own. By comparing their work to that of a professional in the field they can assess their own skills and ask for my help when they are having trouble.
Hi Charles, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, because this is student driven, it can be very effective. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

It can help the student stand outside of himself and see his progress. This can be very encouraging.
