Hi Mary, I think that you will find the Minute paper very effective in giving you useful information to tailor your instruction.

According to CAT section of this course, classroom assessment techniques (CATs) are important sources of feedback for both instructors and students. Knowing this, I plan to incorporate the "One Minute" quiz where my students will list the most important concept they recall from the session. I will use their anonymous responses to determine if there are any communication gaps or sections I may need to re-visit.

They help me make sure everyone is paying attention.

Hi Monique, Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using CATs effectively - students need to know that we are taking their feedback seriously and using it to improve our instruction.

I have students complete a Feedback Memo at the end of class. It is written to the instructor and identifies each students' process analysis of class content. I then read them before class and answer any questions or review content that was difficult to understand or requested by the student. I then review the memos in class and have a follow-up or roundtable discussion.

There are many different types of CATs that can be used in the classroom, whether its a quick quiz, or a test or informal by asking questions, student presentations, teach the topic to other students can see how well they are understanding/learning the information in their world. Also, shows the instructor how well they are comprehending the information.

it helps professors to access thier overall teaching by the results of the feedback, therefore it helps both.

I can use CAT's to asess the students learning in that class and also to see if there are any questions that were not answered in class

Hi Bernard, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, that is the importance of CATs - "real time" feedback!
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

It is important to include CATs for improving learning. Without continuous, real time feedback, you will not be able to make the necessary adjustments to teaching styles necessary to maximize learning.

Hi Traci, Thanks for your post to the forum. Getting that immediate feedback is very valuable when planning continuing lessons. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Hi Heather, I agree that it is a good practice to always begin with a review of some sort. There is no point in covering new ground when the foundation is not there. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I quiz the students verbally after lectures to make sure that the information was relayed properly and/or they understood what it was we were talking about.

Hi Heather, I really like that idea especially if we use it consistently and student expect it.

Beginning with a short review quiz from the last class period helps me to see who went over the material at home and who did not. It also helps me to recognize points that were not covered adequately the last time.

Telling students that they will have to tell me one or two new things they learned and one thing they did not understand at the end of the class, before I actually start teaching for the session, encourages students to pay attention throughout the class.

CATS help me to determine which students have been keeping up with the weekly readings and focus on those students who need additional motivation.

Case study discussion seems to be my best CAT method. When facilitating a discussion on a case study, it quickly becomes transparent where the students are really feeling comfortable with the new information and where they are not. This tells me the areas of the content that are well understood and the areas I need to revisit. It's also an opportunity to validate the students and build confidence in what they have learned.

Cats or quizzes help me make sure everyone is paying attention.

Background Knowledge Probe surveys give the instructor a groundwork from which to build on the basic knowledge of the student and what is needed to assist the student in reaching the established goals of the course.
