Student Evals

This gives them the opportunity to eval themselves in how they are progressing, if there studying style if effective, and what they need to modify.

Hi Cecelia - Thanks for your post to the forum. Actually, from what I have seen, 40% is pretty good. We have tried all sorts of things to improve participation. The best thing that I have found is to make a personal plea to my students, emphasizing that we need feedback to improve our game. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

40% of the students at our college participate with instructor evaluations. How can we get students more involved in evals?

That is something, if untrue, you just ignore it if there is only one like that. If there is a pattern, then you nee to look at what you are doing to see if the statements have any validity. If they do, then YOU need to make the change.

Hi Carolyn - Thanks for your post to the forum. I also learn a lot from my student evaluations. Just wish there was a way to get more students to participate in the evaluations! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I like to see how the student evaluates me because if they write a suggestion or something negative, I can work on those for the next class. Of course, I love to see positive comments, it makes me feel good.

HI Phillip- Most Colleges that I work with only do the end of quarter/semester evalautions and I think that evalations at the 5 week mark are really useful in correcting problems before it's too late. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Student evaluations are one form of student feedback and can be helpful. What I find most useful is the written comments. My college conducts student evaluations in Week 5 of a 12-week quarter. I would like to also see student evaluations at the end of the quarter. When reviewing the evaluations, I try to look for patterns in the ratings and comments.

Hi Anne-Marie:

Evals are always a tricky subject. So far I have been lucky enough to get great evals from my students. However, I still don't rest on those laurels. I personally would not give me scores as good as my students, so there is always room for improvement.

The question is simple: do we want to become better instructors or not? If not, then we just keep doing what we are doing for better or worse. If we do, then evals are an important aspect to our own self assessment.

HI Charles - If the rest of your evaluations are positive, it is almost always the case of a disgruntled student who just did not do the work. I would do nothing. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

How do you handle a student eval that is just untrue with regards to the instructor's teaching methods during the course? I mean if they report that something was not done or covered when in fact it was.

Hi Agnes - Thanks for your post to the forum. I find that good teachers usually enjoy evaluations of their performance and those who are not so good get very defensive. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I particularly like student evaluations for the teachers as they permit the student to inform the teacher of how they view the teacher's performance.
