Active Learning

Is active learning an essential component in a career college?

Hi Duffy - I responded to Shannon who posed that question:

Hi Shannon - Thanks for your post to the forum and a very good question. I truly believe that getting students involved in their learning (active learning) is essential in any learning environment - K-12, post secondary, private, public, university and career schools. Unfortunately too many teachers take the easy route of lecturing only. In large universities this is a problem because what else can you do in a 200+ class?? Most have gone the route of attaching "recitation" sections to those large classes with teaching assistants to provide more "active learning" opportunities. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

it is essential to any type of learning situation. is this question a setup or are you really wondering if it is essential?

Hi Marietta- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, if students are really involved in their learning they do tend to try to learn more - often on their own. It's so exciting to witness!

I like to engage my students by asking lots of questions and opening dialogue during the class, especially those classes where there really no hands on component.

Yes Michele,
I so agree with you that students stay in tune with what they are learning and they can also build upon what they are learning when active learning is part of the class.

active learning is assencial for students progress!!

Active learning adds to the lecture by re-enforcing the topics and adding the critical thinking piece.

Hi Siobhan - Thanks for your post to the forum. Your comment on the benefits of active learning is right on the mark! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Active Learning is as essential at college level as it is at any other. It allows the students to participate in the Learning process and apply the new knowledge/skill. It also facilitates interaction and feedback from the student. Lectures are essential but when mixed with Active Learning the result is an increased level of participation and motivation from the students.

Yes, this is very important. It keeps the students in tune with what they are learning and they don't loose content. They can build on it.
