Evaluating students

It is important to give students regular feedback regarding their progress in your class. A student has the right to know where they stand gradewise. Using progess reports and offering tutoring for those who are struggling is an effective tool.

I do agree that it is important to give a student feedback on their progress, and if needed i will assist them by offering tutoring for them

Hi Christopher- thanks for your post to the forum.
Your method of giving feedback is excellent. Unfortunately we do need to give our students criticism at times, but as you mention we follow that with positive ways that they can improve.

often times when giving students feed back we have to find ways to break bad news. this is often the hardest thing to do. i alway try to lead off with a good point based on what they have done. then the middle is the bad news. but finish with ways to imporve and remind them that it can be done and we all can inporve. i also often tell of times when i had problems in school.

Our students can keep track of their grades online. They are also welcome to ask anytime about their in-progress grade. I do my best to ensure I verbally reinforce when I see progress or when I feel a student may be able to step up their performance.

Hi Roy - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are doing a great job of giving your students timely feedback on their progress! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I agree with this as well. We utilize Blackboard as a part of all of our courses at the college where I teach. Our Dean has also developed a form that notifies students of their progress in class, and creates an opportunity to have a discussion with each student about their grade.

I agree with you and will say that after each test the student is informed of their grade to that point and progress reports are handed out in the middle of the term. I think this is important for students so they know exactly how well they are doing and understand where they need to improve.

HI Celeste - Thanks for your post to the forum. You mention the importance of "regular" fedback and I agree that this is crucial! Students cannot suddenly discover though a mid-term exam that they have not been understanding what we've been teaching. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
