Post test review
I think it is a very good idea to have a post test review. It is not always convenient to do this during the class time as that takes away my lecture time. I do suggest to the students to come to my office and look at their test so that they know what they missed and that it is one way to make sure that they do not repeat that mistake again.
Hi Pedro - Thanks for your post to the forum. I know that you will find post-test reviews valuable! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I would like to implement this technique more. I can see it being beneficial to both student and instructor.
Hello.... I try to take at least a few minutes of class time to review most of the questions that the class have gotten wrong.
This is also a great review for the entire class of some of the high points that I need them to remember. If many students did not do well with certain questions maybe I need to look at my self and review it with a totally different approach.
When correcting tests, I check off the correct answer if I am using multiple choice. I then ask students if they have any questions about the correct answers.
Hi Linda - That is a really excellent practice! It gives the students and you, feedback that is very valuable. Susan
I agree Marie. I try to take at least a few minutes of class time to review most commonly missed questions, and the reference to the correct answer. This can also be a learning experience for me as a new instuctor, as it may high light an area that I did not properly cover. If many students did not do well on a particular area, I may review it with the class with a totally different approach.
I use this technique as well. It ensures areas of test where the student may not have done well. Allows them to remediate.
I will review only those questions that seemed troublesome for many students.
However, I encourage all of my students to come to me privately to explain why they answered a question the way they did. Sometimes I will give a students points for their thought process, especially when their explanation is well thought out (and accurate). My students know this is an option and will frequently discuss wrong answers amongst themselves to see if there is a way they can "make it work!" I think they learn as much from these discussion groups as from their own studying.
Hi Mark - That first day assessment gives you a starting point that students can use to compare their progress to the summative evaluations.

Hi Jeanna - I agree That tests are pretty useless unless they are reviewed so that students learn from their mistakes. Best wishes - Susan
Hi, I also agree that a post test review is highly beneficial to the students. Not only do I review the questions, but we also hold a class discussion over WHY is that the incorrect answer. In my experience in teaching adult learners, our studnets need to understand the reasoning behind the answer. Reviewing the exam questions as well as having an group discussion benefits and enhances the comprehension of the material. Yes it does take from class time, but in my mind it is a necessity.
i agree.. there should be a post test review so that the students know and realize why the correct answer is that such that it is..
we are in a little different setting but have given the course test first thing, first day just to give the students an idea on where they are and what we are going to cover over the next 3 weeks. i would say for the much part we see a large improvement comparing the test on the 1st day to the last day. granted, the 1st test doesnt count for anyting but the students like to compare to see what they have learned.
Hi Corliss- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, students need to see where they went wrong on a test, if not, they will not benefit from the assessment. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
It is important for students to review tests and review missed questions. If they are tested again over the material, perhaps they will not miss that question (s) again. This should highten their understand more.
Hi Earline - Thanks for your post to the forum. I always do a brief post-test review and I make sure that I am prepared with the test stats soo that I know which questions the students had trouble with and we can quickly discuss what the disconnect was. Best wishes! Susan
I like postest review it does act as a review , and some students have even found errors that I may have missed.I do also agree that the time for post test review time should be limited to 10-15 minutes so that it does not consume other class time.
I call it Review - Preview! You review the materials with the students, have them preview to you what they learned.
