Student assessments

I use a variety of types of assessments including written and online.

Hi Megan, I also prefer to use written work in that manner. Students can better reflect on the assignment and revise their writing accordingly.

I like to incorporate written assignments that are ungraded to gauge how much my students have learned in a class session. I don't tend to use them for summative evaluations, because my experience in teaching has shown me that students are more comfortable with tests where they recognize (i.e. multiple choice) and recalling summative information in a written form promotes a lot of stress.

I try to mix up the assessments. Different types of questions though most are at the knowledge level. I always have at least one essay question to try to move them to another level. The essay questions also give me an opportunity to assess their writing and grammar. They might know the information but if they can't convey it in a readable manner they won't have much success in the real world.

Doing student assessments is an individualized process. The results may be the same but there are many ways of arriving at it. This is a skill that is developed and polished by the instructor. It involves skill and caring.
