I think that acknowledgement of student performance is very important to not only motivate the student but also the other classmates

Yes, I feel that positive input can be given for not only complete correct responses, but for effort and for partially correct responses. The student can learn how to build on what they know until the idea is complete.
Acknowledging students progress, correct or impressive performance is encouraging to not only that student in particular but to each of the other students as well. All students love to be praised. Even if it only encourages the shy ones to come and speak to you after class, it will give you the opportunity to offer positive feedback which may provide the confidence they need to participate in group discussion. Privately letting a student know whether he/she needs to become more attentive, focused or possibly require some extra help in a class is also important to the progress of both the student and the class. When a student in encouraged to "dig deepeer" they will often find satisfaction in their success and enjoy sharing it with their peers, which in turn may lead others who need help and are afraid to ask to seek it out as well.
