It is a low stress way to find out what the students are retaining.

I usually start my class with question about the way they like the delivery of content , and I used the pop quizzes with good results too.

I teach nursing, both theory and clinical. I always utilize CAT's in the post conference discussion format, but have never utilized them formally in the theory classroom. I plan to utilize the idea of the envelope with a question on it at the end of every lecture to determine what learning is/is not taking place and to review the concepts at the beginning of the next lecture. A great idea!

I agree with this, not only does the student get to see what they have learned, it helps bridge to the next topic.

LET THE STUDENT KNOW WHAT YOU LEARNED FRO THE CAT AND HOW YOU WILL USE THIS INFORMATION

Hi Gary, That's an excellent use of CATs!

As I teach, the syudents have a wide variety of different instuctors and styles before I get them. I Use CATs to identify what they already know and get an over all feel for the class level before I start on my topics. Also shows how much review I might need to incorporate.

I'm really fond of minute papers because it allows the student to summarize his or her understanding of the lesson taught.

Using CATs is very informative as to the effectiveness of the teaching.

CATs are very important with progressive evaluation and feedback for students. If students are not evaluated how will they know if they are learning the proper techniques associated with the curriculum and also as instructors how will we know if we need to change our delivery method of curriculum content? The benefits are universal in respect to how we teach and how the student learns and adapts to the learning process.

Hi Karen, Thanks for your post to the forum. As a fellow instructor, I feel your concern as well! I hope that you will have good results with the CATs. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I'm more focused theses days on being able to find out if the students are really getting the material that I'm teaching or if they live in a constant state of feeling overwhelmed or overloaded and not able to process information well. I like the suggestions provided in this section. I"ll probably start with Minute Paper and Punctuated Lectures and see what adjustments to my delivery of material will be needed.

I believe that moving from the classroom to labs has been somewhat under this category without me realizing it. So I would like to think along the lines of implementing more before moving towards the shop area. Thanks, this is an area i have not considered before.

Expand the options by blending assessment techniques in the classroom and shared or summarized by the instructor or the students can help improve learning outcomes.

Keeping up with student progress is very important to me as an instructor, since in our field we constantly build on the previous work. I do like the idea of "pop-quizzes" and will definitely try that in the coming term.
I agree, and also try, to give constant feedback to the students as to their progress in the class. I strive to keep them encouraged and see the progress they are making.
