CATs help my students stay on track and stimulates healthy discussions in and out of the classroom. They provide valuable feedback about my student's performance.
Thanks Polick.
Classroom assessment techniques very inportant source of feedback. Everybody not perfect. I am trying to know my drawback in the classroom. I am trying to make it correction.
Well this system make this easier for knowing the priogress of the students. Its also is fair way of testing the studnerts on what has been taught.
I think they can give an insight to what are the strenghs and weakness. It gives a formal place and followup with feedback in class. It's important to give an assortment of question styles and also so that you can cover the content according to the students optimal capacity. It is a way to ojectively assess where the strenghs and weaknesses are, and can adjust teaching accordingly.
Hi Lydia- Thanks for your post to the forum. You are obviously doing a great job of helping your students with their critical thinking skills! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I use a lot of open ended questions ,it gives the opportunity to elaborate in a subject and practice what the studends have learn before .Studnets love to "tie knots ,bulid those chains of information" and solve a problem. They see how much they have learned and makes them more engaged in their classes.
Hi Deward- Thanks for your post to the forum. I totally agree- the more relevant we can make our teaching the more students retain it. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Judith - Thanks for sharing some great ideas for CATs!! Best wishes - Susan
Quick writes, and exit cards are good methods for CATS.
Quick writes require students to write down what was learned (after a video, lecture, reading assignment) about a topic within a brief specific amount of time.
An exit card is 3 thought provoking questions that students must answer and submit prior to leaving class. The questions relate directly to the objectives of the lesson for that day.
The information used for these CATS can be helpful to the instructor to know if the student's are comprehending the information and whether he or she should revise their teaching plan. The CAT is also beneficial for the student, so they will know whether they are comprehending the information.
I think if you can relate real life to learning it becomes applicable.
Hi Ann - Sorry for your dead mouse! Yes, CATs break up lessons and give us immediate feedback. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Peter- Thanks for your post to the forum. I liked your having students outline material. It does demonstrate their comprehension. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I have used an outline format, where I ask students to outline some key points we have discussed today. Then, the next day, I will read them back to the class and ask if I there has been anytthing left out or if anyone has any questions,
I like the idea of using CATs, as we must present a lot of material in each class session- CATs would be a great way to break up the material into sections and get a feel for student comprehension- either I would need to review the material again or know that I could move on. Students would either be happy to see that they understand or be scared into studying- either way, they are becoming familiar with my testing methods. (I may have posted this same idea twice- my mouse just died and I lost my response while trying to click submit...)
CATs would be very useful in keeping students on track and involved. Punctuated lectures would demand student invlovement in the application of knowledge.

Hi Brandon - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, demonstrating the relevance of the concepts they are learning definitely increases their retention of the material! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I like this area because my clases include both didatic and lab practice. It fits everyone's learning style and I can assess them in various ways so I get a true picture of their learning.
CATs can be incorporated by understanding at the beginning and end of class by giving small assessments to see why the student started and how they finished throughout the day.
