Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs)

I think the "CAT" technique would be extremely helpful for our instructors. We use surveys are the end of the semester to get an idea of what works at our school and what doesn't.

I really like the idea of the minute paper. It will give me insight into the students ability to communicate as well as how the student is understanding the material and if they have unanswered questions.

Hi Megan, Thanks for your post to the forum. You might want to consider using CATs on an even more frequent basis. The feedback you and your students will gain is so valuable! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

As a new instructor, My school currently uses a form of the CATs at the end of the term. I am planning on doing this before (at midterms) because I also want to know where I stand in relation to what my students feel they are learning.

I cannot imagine a classroom devoid of assessment techniques. The results from the application of these techniques are what instructors and students use to determine how much and what is learnt. It helps the instructor to revisit lecture techniques and content and they keep student abreast of their progress.

Hi Amy, I am glad that helped! Have a great week!

Thank you for the link to the website. It has many ideas for use of CATS in the classroom. This is a new concept for me, but I can immediately see the value in using it.

Hi Brandon, Iowa State University has a great list. http://www.celt.iastate.edu/teaching/cat.html

I like the idea of CATs very much. Is there an in-depth list of CATs online?

Hi PatJohn, Thanks for your post to the forum. CATs give us formative information that can help us design our instruction WHILE we are teaching our students. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.
