I prefer scheduled "daily quiz" over Pop Quiz...term makes ME nervous
I also use pop quizes as a means of feedback and understand from my students. Pop quizes are also great for the student in that they can measure where they stand in knowledge retention.
encouraging students to better prepare their thoughts through pop quizzes also increases their self perception and confidence about the topic
Hi Kevin, Thanks for your post to the forum. Those frequent quizzes are also valuable to us as instructors because they give us the feedback we need to assess our teaching. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I have found that when my students know that I give pop quizzes they show up to class more prepared. They actually go home and night and do their homework and re-read the chapters that I covered that day. Due to this, their overall grades are higher and they learn more.
Of course you have the ones that never study and they just do poorly anyways....
Are pop quizzes really the answer to increased student awareness? Probably, but my experience has shown that as adults students, they don't take the time to learn the material that is presented to them unless they are told it is an announced exam/quiz. Yes, it is an indicator of where the student stands, but it can also be an indicator of what is not studied
I can't agree enough. Pop quizes not only help me assess my students, it also motivates the students to focus and study more.
I agree! They are a great feedback tool. They really give you an idea where you stand.
Hi Stanley, Frequent feedback via assessments is so valuable!
