progress reports

what is the best way to give student progress if they aren't doing well in class?

Many choose our field in weld education believing it would be free of many of the classroom pressures and demands of visual or listening types of education other than just hands on. We face this problem a lot so we monitor progress each classroom with a assessment and if one falls below the needed level we show him or her the level we need them to be and give free private tutoring geared at their level.

We give our students progress reports weekly, and they are also able to check them online daily. There are pluses and minuses to this.

It definitely keeps you on your toes as far as grading goes, as they know immediately if you fall behind, and they are not afraid to let you know it.

It also gives them a false sense of security sometimes, as early in the term all that is in the gradebook is homework, which isn't weighted heavily. Later in the term as their projects and exams are entered their grades can drop significantly when they thought they were doing fine.

Hi Jviveros, Yes, giving feedback after assessments is essential to give students information on how they can improve.

I give my class progress reports after every test and if they are doing poorly I will ask them what can I do, and I also ask them to go to tutoring.

Agreed, during the course the students need to be able to see their progress. So if some are behind they can take action before it's too late.

Hi Marilyn, That regular feedback is essential to keep students on track.

I give my students their grade % every 5 days. This keeps them informed where they need help with test taking or just study skills. I have found older adults have lost that skill of how to study, so I will refer them for tutoring.

We do a mid-term evaluation which, because of when it occurs, only covers about 10% of the material. Then, after that, I will email them or call them if they have not improved their performance. The nature of my class is prep for employment. I do not coddle them. My expectations put the ball in their field. They will not find an employer to reasure them and nurse them to understandings.

My students get biweekly updates on their progress in class. I do that so when it is time to give midterm or final grades students have been given the chance if needed to bring up their grades, attendance, etc.

Hi Marcie, The important thing is to try to determine why they are not doing well in class. Are they learning disabled? Do they have trouble reading? Are they working too many hours at their job? Are there problems at home? Or, is just that they are not doing the required work?
