Hi Theresa- Thanks for your post to the forum. Students sometimes don't understand why those skills are so important. We try to bring in guest speakers from industry/business to emphasize the improtance of "soft-skills". Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
In the graphic design field, as in other fields, these general education skills are necessary job skills. Communication with clients and staff, math skills for problem solving in the production stage etc. all are essential to becoming an effective professional.
Ihave found in Ethics class, they write before
the genreal skills. They wrote like texts on the phone. That is not a sentence.
Hi Craig - I think it's like riding a bike - division will come back - LOL! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
This is true. I am a third year medical student, and can you beleive I forgot how to devide?? Silly, but if you don't use something for so long it can disapear.
Hi Tina- Thanks for your post to the forum and for sharing such an uplifting motto! If you don't mind I'd love to use it with some of my classes!
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
As a teacher of Medical ethics it is important to have the ability to formulate thoughts on ethical topics. The need for writing and critical thinking is important. Math I believe is a way for a student to comprehend in concrete terms what is the answer. In Medical ethics there is no right answer in contrast to mathmatics. The threes R's are still very important even in today's techno society.
As a mathematics instructor I encourage students to look at mathematics courses this way:Â I call it P P P P P or P^5

Problem solving. You will have to deal with solving problems every day in many situations. We all can improve this ability.

Perseverance. Now that's something important to have. You are sticking with something that you don't see much value in yet you are going the distance. You are persevering and good for you.

Practice. I was never any good at playing the piano. But I practiced and I got better and it was a really good feeling to have.

Patience. Math can be tough and frustrating and humbling. With patience you can get through it and don't forget to ask for help.

Pride in accomplishing a difficult task. I hope you feel proud when you complete this course. You can say, "I did it!"
In my opinion, math enhances those 5 P's and will get you very far in the business of life.
Knowing the general education level of a student is critical to the instructor. If basic, reading, writing and math skills are missing, the level of education must be adjusted to accommodate their ability to learn. If beginning reading is needed, so be it. Get started with tutoring and bring the student up to the level needed to be successful in the course.
As a instructor in a Medical Assisting program, it is imperative my students have strong foundation in general education skills. The math is important to calculate dosages, and strong language arts skills are needed for effective oral and written communication.
It is important because it allows the instructor to have an understanding of the learning level of the student. It also helps the intructor know how easy or difficult or in between to create assignments.
Knowing baseline information such as this will help us plan how the course will be taught.
In my opinion , and regardless of the program or the major; students must demonstrate competencies in math, reading and written communication to ensure their success since these are basic foundational skills.
Bravo to you, Deanna for pushing your students to a higher level! Best wishes - Susan
I have several adult students who still speak and write the way they do with their friends. I spend alot of time correcting their grammar because regardless of the hard skills they learn from me, if they cannot communicate effectively, they will not be able to survive interviews in order to get jobs. If you sound "ignorant" people will believe you are "ignorant".
simply gives the instructor info on the basic abilities of the students.
Well, first of all, the entire foundation of how we live our lives and how we make it in the world today involves reading, writing, and math, and the comprehension and application of those tools. If we pay a bill, or shop, or communicate, it is all done through these three methodologies. In addition, I teach from a Master Student book that insists "companies looking to hire college graduates are most interested in the potential employee's verbal and written communication skills." And if you can not read, well, then, good luck.
proper writting and orakl communication prevents misunderstanding and conflicts, allows coordinatdc efforts and team work.

overall personality to get along with other to work as ateam is important part of career skills education
The general education skills are very important to instructors to be able to asses the students properly. It allows the instructors to relay the information appropriately for the students to comprehend the information.
HI Alice - I congratulate you on making the effort to provide remediation for your students lacking those basic skills. It is indeed a shame that we see this so often. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
