grading tests
I love to review the day before a test with my students I feel it gives them encouagement to go home and study a little more. As soon as they are done with the test we grade them as a group and I discuss whatever they got wrong so they can learn from it
Hi Lyndi- Thanks for your post to the forum. Conducting reviews in class is really effective because it gives the students the opportunity to ask us questions and gives us an opportunity to see what they are unsure of. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I find that my students like to go over the review before the test in class. Working with adults that have after school jobs, it is hard for them to study. They enjoy having a study group doing class time and going over any questions that they are concerned with.
Hi Alexander - That's a very effective way to review. If you give them a topic to focus on and they draw a blank, they will know they need to review. This is considerably better then giving them a question and supplying the answer to that single question. Best wishes!
Susan
I do reviews, but structure them in such a way that the students--or at least the ones who participate--have to supply the answers, I don't just tell them the answers or tell them what areas to focus on. I find that by reviewing the material up to that point doesn't just feed them the answers, but it seems to support the material up to that point. I'm also hoping that if a student realizes that they were coming up with wrong answers during a review that they will ask a question or at least recognize that they need to revisit the areas with which they were having problems before the test.
i agree as well. however, i find that students do not ever pick up the text book. it is a bit shocking.
I agree . It also releaves any tension about waiting to find out what they got
Students have a habit of flying thru the question without having a solid comprehention of the question, of course leading to a wrong answer.
on your day before test do you used the same questions on a final? or how do you make them different with still being relivent.
I don't. It's like giving them the answers
We also review, however, we do it a few hours before the test begins. Invariably, this still does not eliminate wrong answers on the test. I feel most wrong answers are a result of misinterpreting the question rather than actual understanding.
I agree with the review the day before to encouage students to study at home.
I also review the day before. We go over pre-tests, assignments and our book notes. I feel this helps them all equally. I have also made flash cards to review.
Since so many of our students choose to "cram" for tests the night before they take them, it really does help to give them some direction in the form of a review the day before the test.
