Assessments

Assessments are difficult for me sometimes. I try to find many different ways to address the different types of learners in my classes. I use different methods to assess their learning, not just a multiple choice quiz at the end of the quarter, however, I'm not sure if my multiple choice assessment assess what they are suppose to. Any suggestions?

An excellent post Anne! Keeping the learning styles in mind when planning assessments is really important!

I think that 3-5 essay questions are good to have on tests because they involve more mental commitment on the part of a student. They have the opportunity to summarize IN THEIR OWN WORDS different aspects of what they have learned. Some essay questions could involve illustrations, as well, bringing into play the strengths of the visual and tactile learners. An example of this might be sketching a graph or a pattern.

I agree Patricia - and this is why it is important to have as many different types of assessments as possible. For example, to try to gauge what a student has learned using only one comprehensive test is just not adequate. Projects, presentations, homework, class particpation etc.must all be considered.

It can be difficult to know if you are truly measuring what the student has learned in class. But I do feel the some students are just not good test takers, but have still mastered the lesson.

Brian - this is a very caring way of encouraging students to feel comfortable speaking in your class. Excellent!

Without putting students on the spot, so they won't be embarrassed, throughout the course, I'll make certain to ask every student at least once about their opinion on a pertinent topic. Since opinons are not facts, and hence cannot be wrong, most students are willing to voice their's, and I never judge their opinion input. However, I'm often able to discern their grasp of the subject matter based on whether their opinions are grounded in the factual data we've discussed in class.
