skill testing

In the skill application tests the students basic skills can be assessed but sometimes their ability to apply those same basic skills to diagnose more complex problems also need to be assessed.

I simulate the test like a work enviroment. I do allow them to use the "help feature" and their book, but make the test so they must know what they are doing before they come in.

Hi Andrew - Skill testing is an absolute necessity in computer classes - exactly correct!
They may be able to pass a writtrn or online test on hardware configuration, network set-up etc., but until they can show that they can actually "DO IT" we cannot be sure that they will be able to use the skills in the field. best wishes- Susan

I believe in skill testing even in Computers. They are doing application of knowledge with the class and homework. I think testing them on applied learning exercises is a win win for the students.

Mohammed I agree with you. That is why I also use competitions with the students as a way of assessing if they are understanding the techniques with hands on. I lie to apply power points to teach the material and then hands on tests to gauge their progress.

I agree with this greatly, with technology always changing sometimes the basic skills testing needs up grading to meet the new BASIC challenges.

I believe in the Crawl,Walk,Run method of testing. If the student is able to apply skills in increasing difficulty, they gain a better understanding, which leads to the inherent ability to diagnose a problem.

I agree, but make sure they can walk before you expect them to run.
