testing students

when testig student in a trade it is very helpfull to use multi choice questions and a few true false one mixed in
That way you can see how well a student understands what he or she has learned.
I don't think it would be wise to use essay test in this type of learning for the vast answers that can be given and still be the right for the questions given even if key words are not used.

Multiple choice questions are the types of questions on most state exams. kepping with that type of questions it helps prepare the student for the state exams.

Hi Joshua- thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that short answer can often be a good choice when Multi-choice T/F are just not going to assess what you need. What discipline do you teach? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I like using short answers as a great compromise between the essay and multi-choice. It eliminates a lot of random guessing, and lets a student who understands material (instead of just remembering facts) show their skills.

I usually give a half-dozen short answers and let the student choose the four they would answer best.

HI Diane - Thanks for your post - you make a great point about the value of essay tests! Susan

I use to like to take essay tests because somewhere in the essay I may get part of the answer correct where as in multiple choice and true/false you are either right or wrong.

I prefer multiple choice tests over true/false. The students can pretty much guess at true/false and get them correct. At least with multi-choice, they have to have a decent understanding of content to pass.

I agree with you. I usually use multiple choice and True and False for my quizzes and for the exams I make them demonstrate their knowledge in the computer following some tasks.

Hi Charles - Welcome to ED 103! I agree that essay questions are usually not appropriate in trade education. Demonstrations and other application testing or as you mention multiple choice, true-false and matching are usually better choices. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan
