Using tests in design curriculum
Many designers do not test well and no matter what the format, it can be fairly unsuccessful. Essay and descriptive tests can be more effective when testing student knowledge as well as project outcomes. This is practical evidence of student learning.
Hi Phyllis- Welcome to ED 103! I agree with you - practical application assessment would definitely be necessary in a Design program although other assessments shouls also be used to asess things like knowledge of local ordinances, or fire retardant fabrics etc. I myself have no experience in this area - can anyone else respond to Phyllis? Best wishes - Susan
I teach literature, therefore, multiple choice, short essay or essay assessments seem to work well to monitor student progress. For designers, I would think “designing” tests for designers would be a challenge. In many ways, I would assume that a practical skills test would be beneficial for assessing that designers demonstrate the application of their knowledge by performing certain skill sets. Have you used practical skills tests before in this area and what type?
I struggle with testing in the design curriculum as well. It's more important to me that they show understanding of the principles through application then tests.
Hi Barbara- As you say, the practical assessments may be the best way to determine student achievement in a program like yours. Best wishes- Susan
