Scenario questions prompting student participation, brainstorming and summarization in class. Formal testing, including multiple choice exams, some true and false questions (limited), and short answer quizes.
That's a good way to generate new test questions!
HI Jennifer - Thanks for sharing excellent examples of effective and relevant assessments combined with timely feedback! Susan
I agree with the previous answers too. I am a chef instructor too.
Students recieve a demo on what to do for "new concepts", and sometimes depending on the skill, a refresher of skills that were taught in previous classes.
Students are graded individually on their culinary skills and with immediate feedback when they are finished.
They also recieve 2 tests which are MC, TF and matching, and they get their grades the next day, unless the student comes back after class or emails a request for their grade. These are over pertinent information that was demoed or lectured on.
There are 2 written projects that are assigned and they are graded and returned with in 2 days or less.
Hi Jeanne- Thanks for your post to the forum. Skills application testing not only gives us a picture of how much a student has learned but also gives students a sense of confidence that they will be able to use what they have learned in the workplace. Best wishes- Susan
Hi Anthony- That really sounds fascinating- I would love to see them working on their drawings! Best wishes - Susan
I teach drawing classes for a Game Design program. So our main focus is on Skill application type of test or projects. In the upper level classes we try and simulate real world application of the drawing techniques needed in the Game Design field (Model sheets, Environments drawings, storyboards, etc.) In the lower level classes we focus on deveopling the basic drawing skills that they will need to be able to do the types of drawings required in industry. We work on such things has figure drawing and perspective drawing. Though we do have soem essay type question, where the students explain the techniques they learn the real assessment is in how they use these techniques to complete their drawings.
I have used this technique of having students write questions, also. Students are usually surprised at how difficult it is to write a good test question whether it be multiple choice, short answer, T or F or essay. It gives them a whole new perspective on learning assessment.
I like skills application tests because they are behavorial in nature. Students have to perform much like they have to perform on-the-job. To me, performance is the key to success.
I try and quiz them while they are practicing. Repetition is the spice of life :)
We cant assess anyone the same. But we can have a out line in witch to assess the group as a hole.Depends on the order of the company or person in charge,so depending on the polices we can break a person down to the mm or we are restricted to a point.personally and privity we can assess anyone to what point we want.Depending on the point at hand.
i am using skill assessment almost on a daily basis and it works well . at the same time i also add questions and answers.
HI Melody- Thank you for your post to the forum. I agree that having interns keep journals is really valuable. They will be able to look back at their expereriences and how they were able to utilize what they had learned in their programs. Best wishes- Susan
My student's are required to submit weekly "journals" of their internship experiences. I encourage them to think analytically as they evaluate their experiences in the field.
So far I have had good success with most of my assessments but I probably have the best success with my shorty answer or clinical skills assessment
HI Rumia- Thanks for your post to the forum. Using a variety of assessments is the wise way to go. It will address the various learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
We rely on multiple choice testing to assess our students basic learning level, and then the rest of our assessment is performance completing tasks to determine a skill level.
I am using variety method of assessment skills to better assess my students level of skills and to evaluate the students need for improvement.
Hi Tracy- Thanks for your post to the forum! Looking at test scores does indeed tell us a lot about what students are "getting". It is also important to carefully review the tests to be sure that they are measuring what we need. For example,If you see a pattern of wrong answers, either the test has a problem or you are not getting that material across. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan
Hi Amy- Good question! The reason for that advice is because it's almost impossible to create an assessment with numerous essay questions with equal degrees of difficulty. This can cause a problem with the reliability of the test. I understand where you are coming from and students will certainly do better answering a question on a topic that they have experience with. However we are assessing not their experience, but rather what they are learning. Does that make sense? Best wishes! Susan
