The criteria for selecting testing content should be the incorporation of learning objectives. I based the outline of my class lecture on the learning objectives of the chapter. I build from the text's learning objectives to create my class lecture. I then use my lecture outline (which incorporates the chapter's learning objectives) to determine the content of the tests.

I believe it needs to be reflective on what was transmitted to the class via lecture. It may be very specific in nature if testing on specific materials or if the material covered a wider span of material (ex. patient in certain heart rhythm, what do you do to fix the situation?) the material may be of broader nature. The criteria picked needs to be the most relevant. The way of best testing this material may then be of more importance. Multiple choice as opposed to an essay format where I need to know that the student knows essentially everything in the right order.

Students often times have anxiety about what content or types of questions will be on the test. If you give them representative quizzes leading up to the exam, they are more confident of their ability since they have clear expectations as to the content and style of questions that will be on the exam.

Hello Ms. Polick,

The criteria that should be included for selecting testing content, would have to be related to the objectives of the course. Teaching online, the objectives of the course are clearly stated, and the tests are geared towards meeting those objectives, while at the same time testing the knowledge of the student on a weekly basis. Our reading assignment did a nice job of pointing out that the results could determine how the instructor presents the information to the class.
The type of assessment that is given to my learners is objective in nature which includes some true/false, multiple choice. For some of my other programs, it is still used, but there is more fill in the blank questions, as they prompt students to do research on their response.

Tests should always be appropriate for students in that they understand the test. Tests need to be reliable and valid. Test materials should be based on learning objectives and should always measure what is intended to be measured.

The criteria should be the material covered in class along with the textbook standard format

I tend to ask questions which verify that the student understands the most essential information to continue successfully in the course.

I agree with Anthony Spadafina on class discussions and for students feedback on their learning style.

Hi Tamikah, Excellent rationale for choosing assessments!

Susan Polick

The criteria for selecting testing content should be based off the course objectives and the application content that the students are learning in the course.
The criteria of the testing should focus on the concepts of each indiviual's ability to comprehend what they learned out of the course.

Hi David, thanks for your post to the forum. I also try to make sure that my assessments are based on what I have presented in class. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I always test off the things that I have taught or demonstrated and not abstract things out of the book, this way I can see if I have gotten to them or not.

Hi Asha, Thanks for your post to the forum. After years of teaching, I have learned that if I use a question that was not covered in class or in the text, there is a good chance that I will be challenged by a student, and rightly so!

I like the info provided in the course. Sometimes we assume that the students will know the answers to the questions we are asking. But if we have not covered it in class and it is not in their textbook, it would be unfair to the students to add that to the test.

I am sure will try and take special care with that issue while making the test.

In the field we teach in, automotive and diesel trucks, the skills needed are not only visual but also hands on. Our classroom has to include all aspects of learning.

Hi Anthony, I agree - the more timely feedback we can get and give, the better we can tailor our instruction.
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I feel that giving quizzes and class discussion covering the material along the way is very important. The student will be more prepared as to what format the test will be given.

my criteria is based on what i taught the students and based on what they absolutely need to know

In the HVAC field we have certain cryteria required by the State. That makes the final exam easy and I fashon quizes to prepare the students for the final and other exams that are required.

Testing content should be on all the major points of the objectives you want students to be competent in as they move on their quest of education.
