Ensuring Comprehension
I teach primarily business courses and find that my students are able to show comprehension best through short essay questions. Are there any other methods that you use to test for this? Why and how?

Hi Melissa-No matter what the discipline is there is always content that is appropriate for quizzes and they can be done on a frequent/regular basis which is important. Susan
Even though I teach a class that involves soft skills, I use quizzes with multiple choice, short answer, true/false, in addition to essays. The quizzes help to ensure my students are doing the required reading instead of being able to BS an answer through more lengthy explanations.
Hi Richard - Thank you! The bottom line in career education is - "Can our students handle the problems they will see in their everyday work?" As you say- they will need to be able to think critically. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I have to agree with Susan, in my experience I have found the short answer and case based questions are the best way to ensure that a student is capable of thinking their way through a problem.
I think being able to approach a problem and critically address it is the best thing we can teach a student in any class.
HI Bobbi - Thanks for your post to the forum! I like to use case studies or scenario based questions. Of course the answers I want will be in essay form but I like to see if my students can evaluate a situation that they will encounter in their careers. Best wishes- Susan
