I think it is wise to use a wide variety of assessment techniques. While there are instances where multiple choice is appropriate, certainly essay questions provide a challenge to students as well. Using these assessments also provides the instructor an opportunity to gather data on student skill level in regards to writing.

I try to utilize multiple strategies in each exam in order to assure that the students not only understand the information but can also apply the material.
Allowing yourself to use a variety of assements is giving yourself and the students a better chance to succeed.
