using multiple formats
is it best to use multiple formats when contructing a test or stick to one method?
I typically use multiple choice for testing unless i find that i need a additional measure for the comprehension of the materials in the class. I need the students to retain and that seems to be the best format at this time but if i see a change in the retention of information i will change to improve the retaining of information
I prefer to try multiple formats with quizes early in the term to gage what type of learners and test takers I have. If I have a group of students that learns and demonstrates through essay format best then that is what I will use. This also helps to keep the course fresh for me as it is not the same every time I teach it.
Hi Elizabeth- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, I also prefer using multiple testing formats for the reason that you cite. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I always try and use multiple formats in my written exam as well as the student's final practical exam. I feel that by using multiple formats students with different learning types all have an equal chance at getting a larger number of the total points possible.
I have found that sometimes the school determines the type of assessment to deliver, which is not always conducive to the diversity of the students. However, I am a believer in gauging the level of the students in a particular class, along with the level of work, in determining the appropriate assessment to administer.
Hi Robert- Thanks for you post to the forum. I understand the need to use assessments that mirror the national boards. Do you also use some that test knowledge to synthesis? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
In our program we use multiple choice quesitons as this is the methods are student will use when taking national board examinations. I like a diversity of methods as I believe it makes the examination more interesting and you can test various levels of information acquisition and understanding from knowledge to synthesis.
Hi Graham- Thanks for your post to the forum. Because your classes are most likely composed of fairly diverse learners it is almost always best to choose multiple assessment types. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career, Susan
