Selecting Test Format
The course content is going to be very important when putting together an exam as well as looking at the learning styles of my students. Working through the course, I will get a gauge of what my students can and cannot handle. However, I will look at my course content and lecture material and tailor an exam that will hit on all the main points I will cover in lecture and homework assessments.
This why I try to use most of the styles of testing usually I will use thmultible syles when giving a big test so that I can reach all learning styles of testing.
I try to do the same as well. Since my institution is more corporated we have standardized tests, which as the lesson mentined makes things a lot easier in terms of preperation. I do attempt to structure lecture based on the test's, and I will sometimes re-arrange the test to ensure it's an istrument to truly test their current knowledge verus what they don't know.
I do agree w Joe, on "working through the course, "and "tailoring the exam." I think it produces true learning. So, my conflict is how to balance the politics of a pre-made test and the needs of my class. I do want the students to succeed.
Hi Allison - Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree totally - there is no point in moving on to new material until we know if our students have gotten what we have already taught. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I tend to test after each chapter in the book making sure they know what they need to before moving on!
Joe, you bring up a good point; "working through the course" and "tailoring the exam". This method takes more time but it is worth it.
Since I teach an accelerated online course it is difficult to structure testing but I do pop quiz after each unit lesson is completed and this seems to be helpful but it is similar to oral quizzes since my students respond with chat notes onscreen. This makes it a real challenge to present!
Hi Joe- Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using the ideal method of constructing assessments! What you will yield is exactly what your students have learned from what you have taught them. Excellent!
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
