I feel short essay are the best way to test knowledge of the student
Hi K.C. Thanks for your post to the forum. Those are my favorite assignments as well. What courses do you teach? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I like to test my students by a research paper in which they choose a topic particular to their course. It seems to work better as they are actively interested in the project, and they can pick the subject matter.
I especially enjoyed the final projects I assigned my students for each module we learned about - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These projects required the students to be creative and tell me something about themselves, their hobbies or their education and career goals. It also required them to demonstrate the compenticies that we talked about in each module. They were fun to read/grade/learn about each of my students and it wasn't too bad to grade as I had a rubric of the requirements and was able to quickly access whether the students demonstrated each competency. This type of project/final also gave them something to add to their e-portfolio that they can share with potential employeers.
I do feel like there is a time and place for each type of test, but teaching the students to think and demonstrate their skills in a professional manner will help them to go far in their careers.
I find that multiple choice and true and false questions are the best way to assess the students knowledge of the subject matter.
