Laura; I agree, testing should be done creatively and based on the material and subject matter taught and reviewed by the students.
I would like to suggest that there are group test and project test because the students become competitive and eager to impress one another.
Hi Karin - Thanks for your post to the forum and for sharing some really creative ideas for activities in an English course! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I teach English Foundations and at times I incorporate art activities as assessments. Students can easily draw a noun, adjective, subject, adverb, preposition, etc. the same as they can diagram a sentence.
They can interview a classmate and submit a newspaper article to prove journalism skills. The students could orally present the articles, etc.
We collectively write stories by having one topic and then sending a story back a row - the first student writes the first paragraph, the second student, the next and so on. Once they are completed, they can proofread and edit.
Hi Laura - I have some instuctors that will throw a joke question into a test which some students enjoy but some are offended by. I like to run an ungraded assessment like a Jeopardy game with students working in teams. It lets me see what students know while they are having fun. Susan
