What are some other ways to test when teaching trades. (HVAC Hands On)

Yes basically I prefer open ended questions for the students it allows them to elaborate more on their answers and demonstrate their knowledge. The problem that I find with open ended questions is that it opens thhe door for "controversy". Therefore I prefer to do half and half in tests. Regards
