Is the test to hard? Do you use it over again? Etc.......

Hello everyone I just wanted to start a chat about making tests in general.
I've been teaching a while and I have seen so many teachers just use the same test over and over again.
In my opinion it needs to be "tweeked" every year, things in my field continue to change and so do the students.
All classes are different and what was easy for one group of students will be hard for another. Unless you want to just "scale " the test and make everyone happy including yourself.
Maybe we should all look in the mirror and see that we need to think more about what we are doing.
Remember the grades students receive on their tests are a true reflection on our "teaching". Yes I understand that there will always be exceptions to this.
You need to be on the pulse of the class each year !!
A test that works this years should be in the trash next year. Put the effort in to help the youth of today.
I have implemented this type of thinking and I'm glad.

HI Mark, Yes, definitely! keeping exams updated is essential!

Exams should be upgraded to reflect current times, techniques, and events. As well as, teaching styles.

I absolutely look at student perfomace and updates to the material when tweaking my exams. I do this often.

I can't agree with you more. Out with the old, In with the new! It's only fair to the students and if you keep up with the times it should not be difficult.

I believe a test should be made with the information that was taught.

Exams should be updated and adjusted on a regular basis.

Hi Ed- Thanks for your post to the forum. Bravo - I could not agree more!! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Pearl - Thanks for your post to the forum. I am impressed by your diligence in creating tests for your classes! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Mark, the courses I teach involve ever changing testing modalities out in the field regarding echocardiography. Every class has it's own "personality" and every student is different. I have never understood the idea of a test bank and I have always typed a new exam. It is quite consuming but necessary.

Mark,

I have been teaching for several years and have not had the "luxury" of reusing a test for year after year. I teach Graphic Design and the industry is constantly changing.

If an instructor wants to present "real world" skills to their students, they MUST change their course content to stay current with technology and that means that they must also change their methods of assessment.

Hi Amanda- Excellent assessment strategy!!Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I will usually rewrite all my tests for the particular group I am with. I will direct the exams to how the class flows considering the content, the time spent on topics, and their learning styles.

Bravo Mark! I totally agree and this is a message that we need to be sure that all our faculty "Get"! Best wishes - susan
