Testing

How do you deal with anyone who complains that whenever they see or take a test their minds go blank?

Susan, I also use short quizzes to help the students prepare for a larger test at the end of the chapter. Study guides are also a great way to prepare the students for testing. I also develop a handout that follows a powerpoint that allows the students to take notes or fill in important information that is being discussed.

This is great. I do the same as well. I have even started given verbal test. I see my students sometimes do better on these than written. I try to do different things to check the students learning pattern. I iterate to my students that in the real world there are a lot of multiple choice questions so they must learn how to do either one. I also do games to prepare my students for upcoming quizzes not just written test.

I offer to review for the test and will even offer to read the questions individually to the student. This has helped the student see that they can do well on the test and models taking tests in a slower more thoughtful way.

I use frequent short quizzes which ar designed to prepare students for a larger test. I also make sure to have study guides for students and conduct a review prior to administering the test. Susan

Hi Meher- Thanks for your post to the forum. I think that a thorough review before a test is useful in decreasing students' anxiety about testing. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I usuall do a good review of the test beofre we start the test. The material covers everything we have discussed in the class.
