As a British-trained student, I would say that the form of testing that I believe is most useful in understanding how much students have learned the content is the 'Short Answer and Essay-type form of testing. Here, students will be given a chance to explain and further elaborate on their answers.

I would say essay questions would be the most useful. Students need to draw from the information that they have been taught to comprise an essay on that subject. No lucky guesses or 50/50 chances...
