Developing tests

Is it better to utilize a variety of different test alternatives for a class?

I use a lot of different tests in my classroom because sometimes I want to know what kind of factual information the students have acquired but a lot of times I would rather have performance based assessed to see what they can do.

Hi Teresa, That's a good question. I think that often the test bank creators are striving to take questions directly from their text and so manipulate the wording to create the questions. This can easily confuse students and, in my opinion, does not give a clear picture of what students have actually learned. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I just came from a conference where I attended a test assessment workshop and wanted to ask this question but did not get a chance. Why (or do you believe) that test bank tests try to "trick" the test taker? How do I avoid doing this if I am the one creating the test?

Hi Brian, Yes, I think using various assessment options "levels the field" for students with varying learning styles.
