Hi Matthew!
Instructors fill so many rolls for students - they are counselor, role model, instructor, facilitator, advocate, etc., etc. I agree with you that when students relate to use and we in some way relate to them, much easier for learning to take place and it can be a delicate balance.
Keep up the good work!

We are role models. I know that my students look up to me. To me, this a crucial step in relaying information to them. They just seem to get the information better, and even on another level. Being able to relate to our students and giving them information that they can use and understand in a practical way is key. Students who come to you after class and are still foaming at the mouth for more discussion and brainstorming says a lot.
Yes agreed the more real world experience the more the class trusts and believes in the class content and objectives.
Yes it is important to share real world experience in the classroom to demonstrate how important the material is to the students. When the student trusts you as a role model they are more receptive to learning.
In culinary school we are definitively role models. Many times we have to do demos, so most of the time the students learn by example.
However, I also believe it's important to explain to the students that first we are human beings so we also make mistakes but the most important thing is to learn from those mistakes and move on.
Secondly, they must be aware that each Chef has their own style and/or approach so we all need to respect it because that does not necesarily means that they are doing it wrong.
Well naturally. An instructor who fails to be a role model has missed a key element of the didactic process.
Hi Thomas!
Points very well made! The way and instructor conducts themselves certainly impacts the behavior and academic outcomes of students.
Good job!

Absolutely. the Instructor must model th appropriate behavior in class and be able to show the students what is expected of a professional. One of the roles of the instructor is to prpare students for future career assignments by teaching them those SOF skills.
The Instructor is a role model;Be it good or bad his style, language, and attitudes represent to his students what is acceptable or expected by his supervisors and peers in their proffesion. His skill level shows what has worked for him and they are expected to aspire to as well.Be carefull what you teach-They see it all.
Hi Stephanie!
I like - what I call - the old fashioned approach when we demand respect we get it!
Keep up the good work!

I do 100%. They are looking for a role model. They will look up to you and respect you if your behavior demands it. Most of us are in the profession they wish to enter. If we show them the proper attitude they will emulate us without a second thought.
Greetings Charles!
Role modeling is on the top of my list of things that an instructor should provide their students. Setting examples and sharing experiences along with giving them the principles behind their chosen profession is essential.
Keep up the good work!

I feel all instructors should be role models setting examples of what is exspected of student, helps them set goals.
I would sincerely agree. If you can't present yourself as a positive mentor and understand a subject well enough that students "get" the idea that what you're teaching is important, it conveys the notion to the students to not take the course as seriously as they should.
The greatest moments I have as an instructor is when a student comes up to me following a presentation and says, "You know...I never thought of it that way before. Thank you for showing me this." When I see that look in a student, or students eyes and see a connection...that they "get it." That's when I go home feeling as though I accomplished something.
i always lead by example and this has adone well for me. the students see me doing things and they get more envolved.
Hi Raymond!
Instructors should be connecting with students on some level so that learning takes place. And - I do agree that instructors should be
"real world teachers" as well as be very approachable.
Keep up the good work!

all instructors are role models of sorts just by virtue of the fact that most if not all are experiencd in their field of endeavor. on a personal note I do think they should be cognizant of their position and respect the students, that is not to say they should be prudes, but rather real world teachers.
