the instructor

In the past, I’ve tried different techniques with challenging students to get the most out of them; but I have to agree that the “best results” that I’ve had thus far was when I gave them clear & direct instructions.

Along with the clear and direct instruction it is also beneficial to repeat and see if all are in understanding.

Learners truly prefer knowing what the instructor's expectations are for the course. It is important to give clear instruction the first day of class.

I agree Christina!

Students definitely need to start with an end in mind and clear expectation as well as expected outcomes. What strategies do you use in helping students know what's expected?

Keep up the good work!

Learners truly prefer knowing what the instructor's expectations are for the course. A course that lacks focus is not a valuable experience.

Hi Dale,
You make a valid point. I find that learning in an accelerated classroom involves a lot of repetition and the students continue to teach me how through their reactions to what I am teaching.

I believe it is inportant to give clear instructions on the first day of class. But I also believe that one should not box yourself in by this rule. I always like to tell the students my clear expectations with the knowledge that nothing is written in stone. That way I can adjust to the climate of that particular class.

Hi Stan!

This approach should certainly eliminate any confusion down the road and a student can't say "well you didn't tell us that". Further, it offers opportunity for students to ask questions.

Good job!

Hi Thomas!

I agree! I can remember instructors who I felt were completely lost AND you felt that the class was completely lost as well. An instructor must maintain control so that learning can take place. Students look to us for leadership and guidance.

Keep up the good work!

I agree with you about clear and concise directions. I project our worksheets on the board and go over each step of the sheet. This gives the student a clear vision of my expectations.

I think a lot of people get confused in a new class. clear instruction puts order to things . And people are more comfortable with this and respond more positive.we are leaders of our classes.

Greeting Sue!

I like to give students a syllabus, calendar and rubric at the beginning of the class. I take the time to go over each during the first class and answer all related questions. Most students finds the tools very helpful.

Good job!

It is so important the the students know what to expect from the class. Clear objectives stated at the beginning of the class and stick to them.

Absolutl;ey. It is hard to backpedal and give the instruction a different way when you haven't been clear in the first try
