I try to get them more involved with the total learning experience.Give them extra challenges or projects that they can try to complete to give them a sense of accomplishment. I have seen problem students become star students with the right motivation.

Students have different levels of learning and different learning styles that they respond to it is good to have a full arsenal of teaching styles that can be used to reach each student.

Hi Steve!

I make them the "teacher's pet". In other words, I ask them to assist me in some way (carrying materials for me, picking up homework hand ins off desk, etc.)which enables me to get to know them better. From there - as I assumed -learn these students lack self esteem so I can begin to reenforce the positive rather than focusing on the negative. If this doesn't work, I must take another direction because one student can't disrupt the learning of other students.

So how do you usually handle a student like this?

Keep up the good work!

ED107 Facilitator

I like to get them involved, let them express a point of view or direct a question to the class.

I will often call them out and share some of their family or cultural experiences on the subject matter. Sometimes they will share but most of the time they will not.

I try to keep them interested and ask questions to draw them out.

Sometimes a student may be disruptive because they are bored. In those cases creating a challenge for them through questions or an activity that will excite them can result in refocusing their attention. Sometimes simply directing your attention on an individual is enough to get the student back on task. Of course there will be times when a facilitator will need to be direct with a student and explain their actions are unacceptable and that you know they are capable of better.

i attempt to let the difficult student have his say about the subject and try to guide him/her in a possitive direction. somtime there is no pleasing the difficult student and i have to be very direct and to the point. it can and has been a problem for me on may occassions.
