Difficult students

How do you deal with a student that is being difficult or disruptive in the classroom?
I ask the student to step out of the classroom or to stay after class and discuss what was the problem.

I try to get to know my difficult students better to find a way to connect with them. When ever possible I will try to assign a special task for them.

The dificult student becomes the center of my attention in a positive way. I'll perform a demo in their work area, ask them a question I know they can answer, or do what ever I can to lead them into the learning experience.

The most common difficulty I encounter with my students is talking in the back corners. I will generally stop until they realize the the world around them is no longer spinning...then I go on. Or, since I am constantly roaming, moving into and out of the student seating area, I will move toward the talkers and at that point they usually stop.

Greetings Cecilia!

Actually, Cecilia both of these are good strategies as long as you didn't loose your cool. Reenforcing positive actions/activities and asking the student to assist you in some way is a good approach as well. So many times the disruptive student is seeking attention so reenforcing the positive creates a more positive environment and hopefully decreases some of the student's behaviors.

Keep up the good work!
