Difficult students

I often find a little extra time before or after class will help, Become an ally with empathy

10% of the grade doesn't seem much but it is the additional knowledge and learning that is worth a million bucks. All we can do as instructors is impart knowledge to the students and hopefully do it in an effective way. Those who say its only worth 10%, just want to get by. But that mentality will never pay off. It will cost them at the end when it really counts.

Nice thought. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. I get that.

Thanks so much.

By you asking him about his homework every week, I don't believe you failed him in any way. He made the decision not to do the Homework, which will cost him growth and experience, plus the information to help solve lifes problems in those lesson.
I have also explain the important of this to my student in (Hopes) it will encourage them to want to do the work at the end of the chapters.
We can lead them to the work, but we can't make them do it.

I have also had a difficult student who did not care about the homework or the respect in my class. Until one day, I made them make paper airplanes and fly them through the room. For the most part it worked.

Showing your students that it is fun to learn is a great way to get them excited about learning.

I totally agree. Kill them with kindness works with difficult people in all venues.

However, I have one particular student in mind that was in a previous class of mine. He seemed to enjoy being controversial with classmates and often allienated himself. He also didn't do any homework at all. I would ask him about it every week. At the final class, he told me that he just doesn't do homework. Homework only counted for 10% of the overall grade, so it didn't fail him or anything. I just felt as if I never truly reached this student. Maybe I failed him in some way.

Any Suggestions?
