Motivating your students
I like using real life examples when I educate
my class. By creating interesting examples of
current personalities or celebreties, students
may find the topic more fun and interesting.
Another way is to have the students practice
using their own information or ideas. This
includes them in the process of learning
Cecilia,
yes the real world experiences seem to really engage the students.
Dr. Ryan Meers
I agree. I add my real world experience in class and this motivates them keeping the course interesting and exciting.
Cece
Francis,
I agree that this is a great technique & one I prefer myself.

For adult education, I try to challenge the students and the Socratic method remains a good technique. To get them engaged, avoid being on the fence...push to one or the other extreme and encourage the student to defend or articulate their position or idea. I find that poeple will arrive prepared and willing to mix it up. Besides the content of the question, theis reinforces critical thinking skills.
Shanika,
I like this approach as it helps the students identify with "real students" & know that they will survive.

nydia,
this is a great way to motivate. This helps the students literally "see" the end result.

I motivate by having past student grads talk to my class
i often give examples of graduate students whom have taken the course passed and continued their sucess with new found career,by getting a job,or continuing their eduation...etc.
Real life examples as well as utilizing visual materials and hands on, can help with motivation.
I agree that the instructor (facilitator) has to show enthusiasm for the subject in order for the student to feel it also. If an instructor comes in with a negative attitude about the subject it will just permeate into the entire class
I beleive student involement is one of the best ways to motivate
I agree with the real life examples. My students tend to stay interested. I find that students retain much, much more when education is made fun. Being that I teach medical, I find that students love to be the instructor at least once a session.
i think is a great idea i use this method all the time
Motivating students is really easy... put the ball in there court, simple guidence at that point takes the learning to another level.
I find that it starts with me being ready and excited to teach this day, what ever the material is. Show that this topic intrest you and show how it will be valuable to the student. I also like to use examples of my experiences to help create a way to remember a important topic or statement.
Using students to conduct interviews, review case studies and use information they bring to the class really helps promote interaction and discussion on how to aide in ral life situations. I use this idea occassionally.
I agree. Applying real life situations helps the students to understand the topic at hand. I often use my experiences to help the students also. During class I make time to have a discussion time where the students are able to sare their experiences that is relating to the topic. I found that bringing in guest speakers that are in the career path of the students is motivation also.
Good idea Ken. I am an IT Intsructor so I like to conduct as many "real world" labs as possible. I give them an overview of up coming labs and the tools we will be using. My students seem eager to come to class early and get started on the labs.
