The need for teacher's to continue learning
I particularly enjoyed this part of the module because I always challenge myself to keep learning.
At the beginning of each course that I teach, I share the following quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Every man is my superior at something and in that, I learn of him." I explain to the class that we all come from diverse backgrounds and have different life experiences. I let them know that we all have something to offer and that I expect to learn from their thoughts and life experiences.
I believe sharing this line of thought encourages students to speak up and also opens them to the idea of learning from one another.

Rhonda,
Isn't it amazing that we do tend to appreciate education & learning so much more as we get older. And to think, we thought we had it all figured out in junior high!
Dr. Ryan Meers
The older I get the more I realize the need to continue learning.
Hi Christina!
What have you found to be very good ways to continue being a learning instructor?
Keep up the good work!

I agree with this statement each morning I say to myself prepare to learn something and share that which you have learned. Each one teach one.
We live in an ever changing world, new technology, new discoveries, a new or different way of doing some thing we learned years ago. Just yesterday a student asked me,"Is the information in this book correct? Is this new information or is this old information?" Even students are aware of how quickly information changes. If we are to be effective facilitator we must then try to be, as much as possible, up-to-date in that which we teach.
I always say to myself each day to learn something new each and everyday.
I totally agree. I recently participated in a co-teaching/training with sixteen other chef Instructors from around the country. It was an amazing learning experience on so many levels. Every instructor was so knowledgeable and talented and we were all amazed at how much we had learned during the week of training.
Carol, I also like that quote that Jan shared from Emerson. At the beginnining of my new classes I like to ask the students to share their experiences with the students because even though they might work in the same field they tend to learn something new every time. This also seems to break the ice for the shy students. It's amazing how much new technology is growing and many students work in different medical fields and bring this new knowledge with them to share with the class.
Teachers need to keep updated not only in their subject matter but also in the new technology in other medical fields.
I beliieve learning is a lifelong passion for me. I would be totally bored if I couldn't learn something new every day. I try to encourage that in my students. Learning should be a fun adventure.
I think no matter what field a person is employed, staying abreast of the changes that occur is very important. Not only does it broaden our own knowledge of the subject matter, it helps in relaying the most up-to-date information to students.
I also liked that quote because it allows students to feel that they can share experiences and learn at the same time. I like the idea of interactive learning because we all can glean something from someone every day of our life.
Teachers need to keep updating their knowledge especially with all the new technology today.
I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and plan to continue to grow and learn even though I am getting older. I also encourage my students to learn as much as they possibly can in order to be as competent as possible. I also tell them that no knowledge is wasted and they will use it at some point or it will help them with something.
I agree about instructors staying current , especially in the field of cosmetology. I try to attend as many continuing education events and encourage my students to attend with me, so we are learning together, that puts us on the same level and demonstrates an example of learning beyond the classroom.
Learning is a challenge to ones ability to keep abreast of what is happening. Technology is constantly changing so therefore teacher's need to continue their learning to be prepared. I learn from my student's as well. Each course that I teach I prepare myself to learn what is new in the curriculum. As the module stated "there is always someone in the class that think they know more about the subject than the instructor." Therefore there will always be a need for teacher to continue to learn.
I think that it is necessary for an instructor to stay up with what is current this wil keep you motivated in The Field of Cosmetology and will help you effectively in The classroom.........
