the need for stimulating students to keep them excited in learning

I beleive it it very important to get students excited and stimulated during the learning process it will make them interact and become involved.

I think that the student being excited about learning and knowledge helps them be better students. Positive reinforcement and something to look forward to will ensure students being on time and thirsting for all the information and helpful hints that you may be able to bestow upon them.

Great example of discovery learning. For me the key is to balance the facts, skills aspect of a subject like math with the excitement of discovery learning. This really taps into the higher order thinking skills that we so desire in our students. They can analyze & apply out of the classroom.

I recently read a little book titled Mathematicians Lament by Paul Lockhart, in which he asserts that most people hate math because of the way it was taught. He says that mathematics should be approached in a classroom setting much like art or music, by discovery learning. Instead of mathematical tables and theorems, students should be encouraged to appreciate the beauty of math by playing with it and discovering what they might have learned by rote. It then becomes their own. I recommend this books to any educator. It really makes one look again at the concept of “teaching.”
I raise chickens. I started the year with 5. One went over the fence and met the neighbor’s dogs. This week, one died from prolapsed cloaca when she tried to lay her first egg. My 3 year old granddaughter told me, “You had five chickens, but two died and now you have three.” How’s that for discovery learning.

I like to role play with students, more hands on gets the participants more interested in the subject matter. For Medical Assisting students it can be performing what they have learned on each other, for example performing EKG's on each other makes them question why their are differences in each. They then tend to try to read their own and each others. This encourages group discussions and review of EKG material and meaning. This is better learning than I could ever lecture on!

Adult learners often need stimulation to help them stay focussed on the entire learning experience. Anything that will keep them motivated will greatly increase their chances at completing their goals.

Hi Karen!

A prerequisite for being an instruction is having the ability to stimulate learning. If one has this ability, students will have tremendous learning experiences.

Keep up the good work!

Also when the whole class is involved, it stimulates other ideas and opportunity for expanded discussions. Discussions may also allow students who do not feel comfortable asking questions get answers or allow them to feel more comfortable being a part of a class wide discussion.

I agree .I play a game of jeopardy on the topics that we are learning in class. This makes learning fun and interactive

Absolutely. When the whole class is invovled in the learning process, the experience is simply more stimulating.

When they enter the room greet them, smile and ask how they are. This makes them comfortableand welcome.

I bring my bedside exprience in the classroom. This stimulates critical thinking and discussion and is very important since nursing clinical rotation for studenst are very limited.

Getting the students involved is always helpful, I've started using a product called LabSim in our IT classes, and I've found that just doing practice labs and tests together gets them stimulated in discussion. Had some knock-down, drag-out discussions as to why one question was right over another.

It is amazing when the whole class gets involved with the lesson it gives you the confidence and the group ties together many more qwestions are asked and concepts seem to be easyer for them to understand.
