group discussion
what is the best approach for group discussion in the classroom, without having only a small percentage contribute?
Use a subject that will be attractive to all students, like a current event.
I have found that by canvasing the class with questions about the discussion topic I know the student can answer I can build confidence in the class to speak more freely.
Michele ,
this is a great idea & one that I've found helps to make sure that everyone gets a chance to talk.

Group discussion is a healthy way of sharing ideas.
Have each student present one comment in a round robin format, keep a chart of the comments and then open the floor for further discussion.
This will help the more reserved students participate and make them feel included.
Kirstie,
This is definitely a challenge. One suggestion I have would be to give 2 good, "meaty" discussion questions & have the students pair up to discuss. Keep this time limited 3-4 minutes & then have each pair share back with the whole group a couple of things they discussed. This way everyone is engaged & thinking about the topic & everyone contributes.
