expert instructor
i enjoy the balance of the three roles of learner, facilitator and teacher. lecture always has it's time and place but isnt always the most effective way of communicating
Ashley,
yes, through the good use of facilitation skills, we not only help the students learn important content, but they have the chance to see a valuable set of skills demonstrated.

Being a facilitator in student learning is very rewarding. In a veterinary technology setting, as instructors, we want to guide our students towards being the kind of technicians we would want to work alongside. Students seem to enjoy knowing that they can learn something and be just as proficient as their instructor with experience and practice.
connie,
you are so right. The term expert does not mean that we know everything there is to know, but we have achieved a certain level of expertise & we are willing & eager to learn more.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
a good expert is always learning new things about the topics you teach, I always inform my students an expert MA is always learning.
IDA,
yes, embracing the role of facilitator is a great move to make as a classroom instructor.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
never could be an expert in health care because there is so much new to learn. I do have alot of experience and enjoy learning new aspects of the field. However I do consider my self more of a facilitatot, because the student also has their role to learn.
Betty,
if we are struggling or the learners are struggling in paying attention, a great question to ask ourselves is: am I as prepared as I should be?
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Kaitlin,
yes, one of the best roles we can learn to develop in the adult learner class is that of facilitator. Guiding the discussions & the learning experiences.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
I agree. I feel the more balanced/prepared the instructor is, the better the learning environment for the student.
