I like to sit in other facilitator classes for different ideas, and of coarse different cee classes

Mary,
this is a great way to grow as you can learn from those who have taught longer, but share your many years of experience with them.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I am a new clinincal instructor, but a veteran in my field. I enjoy teaching others and am always open to consstructive input from other facilitators. My co-instructor and I feed off each other's techniques in teaching the students and it's very beneficial.

I am continually learning more about my subject as research continues. I take Continuing Ed classes, I attend forums and seminars with my peers. I have often realized during my class periods that I have misunderstood or misinterpreted some information and have my own ah ha moment. I enjoy sharing these moments with my class and explain to them that I have just now learned this information along with them. I will also share this with former students to correct information I may have imparted to them in previous classes.

Dr. Eileen ,
this is a great way to stay connected & also provides you with many good stories/examples to use in your classes I'll bet.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

It seems like the more I learn the more I want to share with my students. That means I need to constantly develop new and different ways to deliver the knowledge I have gained to my students.

I am a retired elementary school teacher as well as an instructor for a Masters of Education program online. In order to stay knowledgeable about the constantly changing aspects of my field, technology integration in the classroom, I work as a consultant for school districts in my area. This, as well as attending at least 2 technology conferences a year, keeps me aware of what is happening in K-12 school districts. I also encourage my students, most of whom are K-12 classroom teachers, to tell the class, including me, about what is happening in their schools.

Tom,

this is a great point & those new ways may be in relation to information or in relation to how to pass the information on.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

By taking on-line courses and by reading relevent publications on the topics I am able to update my self. As for as developing the teaching ways, introduce this new developments in the field to the class by engaging in discussions.

I think one feeds the other. I'm always looking for new things to learn or ways of doing things. (in technology, you can hardly keep up!!)As soon as you learn something new and/or different, the immediate question is, "How do I pass this on? What techniques can/should I use?" If you only look at one part of the question and now the other, you do yourself a disservice - or your students a disservice.

It is a necessity working in the healthcare field to keep up with the latest information in order to effectively teach students. I also set aside time to learn more about being an effective teacher, in these CEE courses (I always learn something and acquire new ideas), as well as in areas specific to the field I teach in.

I believe that the need to learn more about mathematics and the need to develop new ways of teaching it go hand in hand. Mathematics is an ancient field, but we are always discovering new ways to approach a topic to make it more interesting and help engage our students. Many students find mathematics a dull and difficult subject. I always tell my students there is almost always more than one way to approach and solve a mathematical problem, I find it essential to keep finding new ways to visually stimulate our students and keep a fresh and modern approach to a topic that is older than the pyramids of Egypt.

Ceola,
this is great as it helps with the balance of introducing the new information in a compelling & exciting way.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Torria,
this is an excellent plan as it does provide the balance. Another way to help in keeping fresh in the teaching discipline is to observe some of your veteran peers & learn from their techniques & even have them observe you & give you some feedback.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I am currently trying to learn how to balance the need to learn effective teaching styles and keep current in my field. I decided to set a schedule of courses that I will take next year concerning my field and courses that will improve my teaching so that I will have balance.

William,
the connection to the career field is a great way to stay on top, we also want to make sure we are keeping up to date with the latest in educational strategies.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

keeping up with the subject matter by attending conventions and seminars. My field changes, technology wise, on a yearly basis. there is always something new. At these outings you meet other instructors/experts who share ideas on how they developed ways on teaching the updates. From this I develope my way of presentation to my students. Classroom time is carefully planned out depending on the topic and activities.

I work full time in a leading edge department and it directley relates to my ability to keep up with the latest modalities to share with my students

G.,
yes, the real world examples & stories are a great way to engage the students & clarify ideas.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Bronzel,
yes, this is a common problem & there is so much to learn regarding good facilitation & classroom skills that go beyond subject matter expertise.
