Best ways to gain focus from students
Use text book materials and real life situations
In my role as a dental hygiene instructor in the classroom setting teaching core courses, it helps maintain students'attention immensely by giving examples from my own experience as a practicing dental hygienist. I get their full attention when I related incidents that actually happened to me when I was practicing. Linking the material to real life events helps them remember and have better understanding of the concepts.
Zack,
yes, humor can be a great tool & also a way to help the students remember certain points.

I've always found humor to be a great tool to keep students involved and "awake" during class. Whenever I myself laugh, it always seems to revive me. This is especially true if the topic isn't as interesting or exciting as other topics can be. Obviously, the humor needs to be topic related and not deviate too much from the subject being discussed.
I my self love to tell storys that have the same basic topic as the student notes I think that it helps them stay awake and on there game as fare as the keeping up with the topic we are on.
Evelyn,
this is a great method as it helps them see how the concepts are applied in the "real world."

I love to give them true stories that relate to the textbook, student can relate to the lecture.
