Use of the talking stick/microphone

I am absolutely excited at the thought of using a microphone or talking stick in my next econ class. My question is since it's recommended for occasional use how do you know when you have crossed the line? How much is too much?

I like this idea as well, too many times I have students blurting out items that are totally off topic..and continue to do so. If it happens to often it creates a certain uncomfortable feeling for the other students. This would be one way of controlling this, and also get others to share an idea or a thought.

I agree that I would also like to utilize this method in the classroom. I especially like how it gives other students time to formulate a question of their own. It will also allow a student to have a complete idea without interruption or adding on someone else's thoughts.

I will certainly be using this technique in my next course!! My hobby is writing and I am a pen fanatic and I explain the importance of a good quality writing instrument to them and why I appreciate that. So from day one they know my love of pens and will appreciate me granting them that privilege when I pass the pen to them!! I like that!

I like the idea of the use of the microphone or the talking stick, however,I would use if with a bit of humor, but not enough to get the student or the class off task again. I just want to be careful not to humiliate anyone in the process. i would also be careful to give others their fair share of the fun, if you will, so particular students don't appear singled out, although it is typically the same student who tend to be disruptive. I think you should get a "sense" of when too much is too much.
