Hi Joseph!

Good job! I think music can definitely have a positive effect in the classroom. I do encourage you to chose the music which promotes learning.

Music is very benificial to the students during lab time. I choose the type(Rock/Roll) and I aloso choose the volume. It really does calm them down.

When I first began teaching, the idea of bringing music into the classroom was a must! I have always completed projects while listening to music and often need it to keep myself focused.
Usually, I will start the classroom off with a small talk about the day's agenda, do my first demonstration and once lab time starts and the students are on their own, I ask, "You guys want some music over there?" and I can see how they perk up immediately and begin nodding their heads. It's nice to see that they appreciate the music to help keep themselves motivated.
I also tend to play music that the students find relatable, otherwise they don't appreciate it being there. They love hearing music that they can sing and hum along with, making them forget the overall tediousness of the work in front of them. When students work on something new or something that can be challenging, it's always comforting for them to have something recognizable leading them through it. In my classroom, this happens to be music.

Great observation, Jose! We must know our students.

Good job!

I agree with you, I also use music during my labs. Although I use different king of music, but it does relieves the student from some stress. I would say they are even more concentrated in their labor when we play some music.
However different students react different to different music. It is important to know your class and what kind of music will work for them.

Greetings to you again Allana!

Good job! I have tried to incorporate music into my class, but have not been successful yet. If you have other suggestions, please share.

Keep up to good work!

With a majority of lecturing and teaching that goes on, it is difficult to include music in our current teaching environment.

As a musician and lover of all music genres, I love to include music in my powerpoint presentations and also there is music included in the videos I show to the students. I know when I was a student, music played a huge roll in my schooling and life in general. It does balance the mind and enhances and stimulates the brain in creativity and productivity.

Interesting James!

At our institution, our radio's are taken away
from us if we choose our own radio station

Music in the classroom during labs helpes the syudents stay more focussed and calm ,but you have to watch what your playing on the radio cause certain music can get them in a agrivative mood like hard rockand older type rock and roll or classic r&r keeps them in a calmer mood .especialy with ones that prefere country usic, they get along with it better

I do not play music during lecture or testing. I do play music during lab. The music seems to make the students relax and enjoy lab more.

I also play music during lab.I usually play a variety to keep everybody happy. It seems that country music does very well. The music seems to calm everybody down and relax them and make lab more enjoyable. Plus out in the real world in an actual shop, there's always music playing.

I use a variety of all types...I play everything from SpongeBob Squarepants to Metallica to Marty Robbins...everyone is different.

Good morning Gerald!

i am curious - how far will you go when offering choices?

I also use music in class, it keeps them from trying to talk over each other because they are trying to hear the music.
I will give them choices on what they want to listen to from time to time to keep it fair.

I also find that music during lab helps studnets focus. They work better they are happy humming as they work. Music helps me when I work on projects at home the same way it helps students work in the classroom during lab.

The one challenge that I have found is the classification of music in the lab setting due to the diversity of the student. Every class presents a different set of dynamics due to geographic origin, cultural differences, and socioeconomic status. I find that I get more production and enthusiasm about a class when I choose a style of music that they are accustomed to but I have run into slight aggravation about styles of music from certain clicks within the academic setting.

Scott - sounds like your classroom style is very much about student learning success.

You mentioned that music has a calming effect on students. Please elaborate on your first hand experience with recognizing the calming affects of music in your lab.

Good job!
