Color usage
I find it interesting how different colors will affect different people in different ways. Of course, we all have our favorite color, but that does not always work in a teaching environment. Normally when I use markers to demonstrate a point, I usually use dark colors (i.e. black or blue) since the board I use is white and I've noticed that lighter colors, though they may help stimulate some students, do not work on a white surface and it may increase agitation and confusion for the students. I however will split between black and blue during different times to either distinguish or emphasize certain issues which may be important for the students.
I feel using different colors surrounding your normal "black sharpie" would stand out more to students. Such as, i'm an educator in pharmacy and students need to learn the different drugs. When i used to write the drugs classifications, and usages on the board all in black, i found students retained less for some reason. When i started writing in different colors, they were able to memorize the different names by associating with the various color.
We also have white boards, and it is challenging to use colored markers in an effective way. The Eric Jensen list of his thoughts about color was right on point... as I have played around alot with different colors and their impact on my learners, I have found that Bright Pink is a good choice for me. It is less disturbing than red for anxious learners, but exciting for all of them.
I too use different colors to organize information by importance on the white board.
I agree. I have started using more color in simple ways. It works for me as well because I can separate out the assignments easier.

I do the exact same thing when teaching. I actually had a student tell me that when I use different colors, they paid more attention. Such a detail, that before taking this module, I would never had realized the impact it has on so many.
I use a variety of colors on the white board.
The tend to alternate between blue and green, and for special emphasis, I use red (sparingly).
It works.
Using too many colors causes confusion and chaos.
Just like with Power Point slides.
Good morning Margaret!
I don't find that any one brand works better than another - none of them seem to take wear and tear very well.

I would be interested to know recommendations on types of pens that work best on white boards. I have found mine dry out very quickly. Any suggestions for product?

Matthew I agree with you I like you splaing your point and how you use the diferens colors with in your class.
I agree with Matthew. Usage of various colors on a white board enhances the learning process. From my experience in the classroom, it acts as a visual aid to differentiate various messges that we want to emphasize.
