music to the ears

using all senses is more than relevant when you are training future chefs. it is important to understand the context and environment a chef will need in order to develop his skills and stimulate his creativity in the kitchen.
using appropriate and varied colorful tools in the classroom can only benefit his prodevelopment and understanding of the environment within, giving him a sense of reality and also alleviating the pressure of stress he might encounter during his learning process,or during his career.

Hi Deborah!

I really think that the "type" of music would be determined by the instructor based on research suggesting the best type.

Depends on whether it's for test taking, break time or for a moment of relaxation.

Using the right music at the right time and adjusting the volumne appropriately.

Good work!

All,
The only problem that I have with using music in the classroom is that I think it would become cumbersome if the students wanted to hear different types of music. How do you keep the music from dominating the classroom?

Deborah Balentine

Hi Jonathon!

I understand your point completely. I have't yet found the best way to include music during class. But I do find using music at the beginning of classes where I have the majority of non-traditional students (evening) is very calming. Most of these students left work, picked up children from daycare, rushed them home then rushed to school during the time when traffic is a nightmare, etc., etc. - they appreciate the moment to unwind and so do I. More learning takes place in a relaxed state.

Keep up the good work!

We cannot have any type of music in the classromm unless they are cleaning up. I feel they need to focus on the tasks at hand and not on the type of music playing

I enjoy listening to music when I'm cooking at home; I find it helps me to concentrate on what I'm doing and avoid thinking of anything else. I would think it would be the same in a Culinary Lab Classroom, encouraging students to focus at the task at hand.

It's nce to have mood music, and the proper mood. Some students are used to it.
